The Lady of Ro
The Lady of Ro

A flag, an isolated island, and a lifetime of unwavering devotion.

The story of Despina Achladiotou — told on the island she guarded for more than forty years.

Ro is a small rocky island west of Kastellorizo. Remote, windswept, and almost uninhabited — except for a chapel, a grave, and the memory of the woman who made it her life's purpose.

For decades, Despina Achladiotou raised the Greek flag on Ro every morning and lowered it again at sunset — without audience, and without ever leaving. She remained on the island through occupation, war, and long years of solitude, becoming one of Greece's easternmost residents and one of the most enduring symbols of the eastern Aegean and Greek nation.

Today, the journey to Ro is more than a boat trip. It is a passage through the history, resilience, and quiet pride of Kastellorizo itself — a chance to stand where she stood, look out at the same horizon, and understand why this small, windswept rock still matters.

Some places are kept alive not by their size, but by the people who chose never to leave them.
